Stepping into fashion was pre-meditated for Vinod Nair. Hailing from a small town in Kerala, where men wore dhotis like mini skirts, most women smelt like drums of coconut oil, he thought the only way to size up pretty girls and still not get hit by their stilettos was by writing about them. So he started that in 1991 when fashion was still small here. Writing, of course, was incidental. In 2004, Vinod Nair was awarded “Best Fashion Journalist” at the first fashion awards in the country, F-Awards. Fashion has gone a long way since then… but he still stands where he started…

Born and brought up in Trivandrum, Kerala, Alan Alexander Kaleekal left a successful career in Engineering to pursue fashion design in Paris at the age of 21. After completing his fashion design studies at Studio Berçot, Paris, the designer worked for some of the biggest Parisian fashion houses before returning to India in 2015. The brand KALEEKAL was founded the same year with the aim of employing traditional Indian handloom fabrics in conceptualizing an avant-garde wardrobe and giving a contemporary voice to Indian artisanal weaves and crafts. Minimal in detail and functionality, the brand aesthetics could be roughly summed up as tending towards often-times awkward looking clothes that question the norms of conventional fashion and garment construction.

Vice President & Head of Design-MFB @ Myntra Designs
Obsessed with creating something that touches lives of people in meaningful ways has been the motto of my design journey. Over the last 17 years of professional career, I have been challenging design thinking that is beyond just creating a good looking product but pushing boundaries of creativity to provide solutions to an ever-evolving lifestyle of consumers. At a personal level as a designer, hunger to innovate everything that is design and fashion has been the key driver for me. Worked with many giants like Levi Strauss & Co, Raymond’s, Page Industries and currently with Myntra, my choices are the reflection of restlessness of still being on a journey that seems far from being called accomplished. There is so much more to learn and there is so more to do. Let yourself flow.
